If you want to make another person’s life better, be a nurse, says TTSH’s chief nurse

Dr Hoi Shu Yin was one of three nurses who received the 2023 President’s Award for Nurses. The chief nurse at TTSH tells executive editor Sumiko Tan that nursing wasn’t a natural career choice.

While Dr Hoi Shu Yin, Chief Nurse at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, was studying nursing in Britain on a government scholarship, she had to follow British nurses as they did their rounds checking up on mentally ill patients living in the community.

In late 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic was still raging, Dr Hoi Shu Yin would escape to the Marina Bay waterfront on Saturday mornings to jog and clear her mind. 

“It was my hideout place,” says the chief nurse at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).
