For this transgender woman, sharing her story is an act of faith in Singapore

March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility. Eliss Chen, who was born male and transitioned to female three years ago, shares her story in hopes that Singaporeans will be more understanding of others like her.

Eliss Chen, 47, has shoulder-length brown hair with highlights of pink, mauve and purple that shimmer when she turns her head. Her nails are manicured with glittery nail art. Her voice is low and pleasant, her smile broad. But her eyes are shadowed with sadness.

I sit across from her at a cafe near Yishun and hear her story.
