SINGAPORE – All I knew about menopause was that my mother had suffered bad hot flushes and night sweats, but refused treatment because she was afraid of the side effects.

I didn’t know that the mood swings I had in my mid- to late-40s were signs of perimenopause, the often turbulent transition years before a woman’s final menses.
