China has responded angrily to British criticism of its proposed Hong Kong security law, and threatened unspecified "countermeasures" after the government in London on Thursday announced its decision to offer a so-called "path to citizenship" to many of the citizens of the former British colony.
About three million Hong Kong residents - almost half the former colony's entire population - could soon have the theoretical right to go to Britain.
