The former Taiwan president, who died last month, had hoped the island's developed economy and liberal democracy would be 'the model for a future reunified China'

The year 2000 was a momentous one for the Taiwanese.

In March, amid threats of dire consequences from Beijing, they voted out the Kuomintang (KMT), which had ruled the island for more than five decades, in favour of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
